Guilty

I totally copied this idea off of one of my favorite blogs---the meanest mom blog--so I hope it's not considered plagiarism. Anyway, I now proudly present a few of the things I feel most guilty about.....

  1. We started reading the Book of Mormon as a family in 1997. To date were in 1 Nephi chapter 2.
  2. Today I called my pediatrician to ask if he would consider putting a cast on our 4-year-old's hands to help him to quit sucking his thumb. The doctor told me he didn't think that practice was legal in this country. I'm expecting a call from family services soon.
  3. If said 4-year-old wakes up before 9am, I tell him it's still the middle of the night and to go back to bed. This is why he sleeps in a dark, basement bedroom.
  4. If my children watch Wordgirl or Super Why or any show in which they show the credits, I count this as their daily reading time.
  5. I'm not particularly good at washing bed sheets. A few times a year seems to be fine.
  6. My children love my cooking. They're favorites include Hamburger Helper and Honey Nut Cheerios.
  7. Until recently, our 4-year-old SON rode a pink and purple bike with the words "Glamour Girl" emblazoned on the side. Let's hope the damage isn't irreparable.
Now, what do you feel most guilty about?

All that Jazz

So last night Rich's firm took all employees and spouses (R thinks the plural of spouse should be spice) to the Jazz game for dinner and, well, basketball. I managed to leave Sam (and the others) at home with my MIL and by the time we reached the freeway I had stopped crying. Although I was having severe "crabitude" (I just made that up--but it fits me to a T, don't you think?) over A) having nothing cute to wear because I'm too fat for my clothes and B) being sure Rich and I were going to die in a car crash thus leaving our children to be orphans and C) still fuming about a minor incident involving a four-year old and scissors earlier in the day and D) I'm just still basically an emotional mess. Despite all this nonsense, I ended up having a great time. Being with Rich is always great, being at a sporting event with Rich is even better! It was an amazing game, with the Jazz beating the Celtics in a very tight match! There was yummy food, adult conversation, and even free wrist-bands and head-bands (see photo). What more could I ask for? We made it to half-time at which point I was convinced Sam-I-Am had died in my absence and so we headed for home, and managed not to get ourselves killed en route. Sam was fine, B,C, and G were asleep, andRich and I finished watching the game before going to bed. It was such an amazing finish to the game I almost wished we had stayed, but baby steps, Kelly, baby steps.

GO JAZZ!

Snow much fun

Do you ever feel pressure on holidays to have some fabulously exciting plans but really all you want to do is stay at home in your pajamas and not comb your hair? (oh wait, that's everyday).

Since Sam's birth we've become shut-ins but today we managed to escape for some snow fun. We have a little place up the canyon (cabin, you're thinking? yeah right) that's called Mile Rock that we love to picnic at during the warmer months. Today we ventured to our favorite spot and found it covered with 3 feet of sparkling snow. The kids had managed to fight most of the morning and several found themselves sentenced to their rooms before breakfast, but a little fresh air did wonders for everyone's attitudes (especially mine) and soon we were all putting snow down each other's backs like good friends do. A favorite part was the King Family luge we made while sliding down the hill without sleds. Another highlight was the snow caves formed by all the snow piled on top of the picnic tables! Even Samurai Sam (this week's moniker) enjoyed his first snow day by sleeping the whole time. The only downer was G having to use the pit toilets (a given) and me having to go in the bathroom to help him remove myriad layers of outerwear to get to the underwear and beyond. The best part of all? NOBODY EVEN CRIED.

Thanks snow much for reading!

My Valentine

Rich has been gone all week, working in 78-degree Houston, and I've been missing him. I was doing okay until I listened to my Lonestar playlist and then I lost it (thank you post-pregnancy hormones) during the chorus of I'm Already There. So I was really, really looking forward to R's return tonight when I checked my email this afternoon and saw this message from him: (WARNING: STOP READING NOW IF YOU ARE AVERSE TO SAPPY, CORNY EMAILS.)

"Just got through security and am waiting for my flight. It will be good to be home. You're the best part." Love, R.

Imagine me....the best part? (I warned you this was sappy.) Cranky, stubborn, overweight, obsessed with Rascal Flatts, completely emotional and irrational me.....

and I get to be his favorite part.

I knew I was on to something when I married a "rich King." I just didn't know then how wonderful he'd turn out to be.

P.S. On a not-at-all-related-note, here's an inspirational thought for you for today. I've mentioned before that my favorite book ever is The Count of Monte Cristo. Last night Sam and I watched the movie (is he too young for PG-13?) again and I was just reminded all over what a fabulous story it is! If you do not know this story you are seriously missing out. Anyway, one of my favorite parts is (I'll try to be brief here) is when Dantes (sp?), who is wrongly imprisoned for 13 years, expresses to his friend that he no longer "believes in God." His friend, the priest, replies, "It matters not. God believes in you." So remember today---GOD BELIEVES IN YOU.
